A breath-taking champagne from an outstanding producer. Aurelien Laherte’s blanc de blancs is a true expression of terroir. It’s pure, focused and energetic. It smells like a fresh baguette and a little packet of sultanas, tastes like persimmon and the ocean, and is reminiscent of a giant bouquet of white flowers inside a bakery on a cool morning. The finish is long, dry and briny – the perfect aperitif, there is literally never a wrong occasion for this wine.

2022 • Domaine Rolet • Arbois Savagnin Ouille • Savagnin • Jura, FR
From Domaine Rolet in the Arbois, this Savagnin is made in the ‘ouille’ style, where the barrels are topped up (so, much less oxidised than their ‘sous voile’ kin) and is categorised by Rolet as floral. It’s absolutely aromatic, and has some gentle vanilla and spice from aging partly in old oak and partly in vat. All this is balanced out with some vivacious terrior driven minerality. A perfect introduction to the style – or the wine equivalent of a dear old friend for Jura lovers.

2019 • Domaine Jousset • Exilé Blanc • Chenin Blanc • Loire Valley, FR
Made from organic grapes that Lise and Bertrand source from the Loire Valley. Half Chenin Blanc from their vineyards in Touraine and half Colombard they found. Extreme mineral characters, freshness, tartness, citrus, green apple and oyster shell. Some light, cloying slip to texture but the finish is all tang and salt water. It’s fragrant too, but pretty mellow in that regard, lemon balm, more ocean air, a bit of almond. Oh, there’s nutty savouriness in flavours too. It’s outrageously delicious.
